The Art of L.M.Barr: My realism

L. M. Barr creates art for its introspective quality. She says her work helps her find balance in the middle of life's confusion. Working since 1997 (at age 15), she's self-taught, painting and collaging in deeply saturated hues and beautiful swirling forms. There's a balance of composition in her style that builds a kind of static tension, while (almost mystically) maintaining a holistic sense of calm and repose. The viewer is simultaneously stimulated and relaxed by Barr's expertly conceived balance, and deftly introduced to her open-ended narratives. This narrative element of her artistic message is meant to begin a journey for the viewer, who must then take it upon him or herself to complete the trek, finding their own way to peace and stillness. Some of her works evoke a sense of familiarity through shared human experiences.
We understand her particular story because we can relate. It communicates a connection between artist and viewer by solving fundamental artistic problems that are more universal, speaking to the basic human condition. Both are alive with an expert voice, one that knows where its coming from. Ms. Barr knows what it means to be human.
An interesting thing that pulls the viewer in, craving for intimate contact: the use of paint additives (such as glass beads and sand) mixed into the paint make Barr's work touchable, and therefore crosses the threshold of the art experience from mere viewing to interaction. She encourages us to touch the work, which is usually taboo in the art world.
